How to Fix Core Web Vitals and Speed Up a Slow WordPress Site

Core Web Vitals: A Technical Guide to Performance Optimization

Core Web Vitals (CWV) are not just SEO metrics; they are indicators of user experience. If your site is slow, users leave. Here is how I tackle performance optimization for my clients.

Phase 1: Measurement and Audit

Before touching code, establish a baseline. Do not rely on "gut feeling."

  1. PageSpeed Insights (PSI): Run your URL through PageSpeed Insights. Toggle between Mobile and Desktop.
  2. Identify the culprits:
    • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): Usually a hero image or slow server response.
    • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): Elements moving after the page loads (missing dimensions on images, late-injected ads).
    • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): Heavy main-thread activity, usually caused by bloated JavaScript.
  3. Chrome DevTools: Open the "Performance" tab, record a page load, and look for "Long Tasks" (red triangles).

Phase 2: Reducing TTFB (Time to First Byte)

TTFB is the foundation. If your server takes 2 seconds to respond, you have already failed.

  • Database Cleanup: If using WordPress, delete post revisions, expired transients, and spam comments.
    • Command (WP-CLI): wp post delete $(wp post list --post_type='revision' --format=ids)
  • Object Caching: Use Redis or Memcached. This stores database query results in RAM.
  • PHP Version: Ensure you are running the latest stable PHP version (8.2+). It is significantly faster than 7.4.
  • CDN: Use Cloudflare. Enable "Proxy" mode to cache static assets globally.

Phase 3: Optimizing LCP

LCP is typically the hero image.

  1. AVIF Conversion: AVIF offers better compression than WebP.
    • Command (ImageMagick): magick input.jpg -quality 60 output.avif
  2. Preload Hero: Tell the browser to fetch the LCP image immediately.
    • <link rel="preload" fetchpriority="high" as="image" href="hero.avif">
  3. Remove Lazy Load: Never lazy load the LCP image. It delays the render.

Phase 4: Fixing CLS

CLS happens when the browser doesn't know the size of an element until it downloads.

  • Explicit Dimensions: Always set width and height attributes on <img> and <video> tags.
  • Reserve Space: For ads or dynamic embeds, wrap them in a div with a fixed min-height or use CSS aspect-ratio.
    • CSS: .ad-container { aspect-ratio: 16 / 9; }
  • Web Fonts: Use font-display: swap; to prevent invisible text during font loading.

Phase 5: Improving INP and JS Execution

INP is about responsiveness. If your JS is blocking the main thread, clicks won't register.

  1. Defer Non-Critical JS: Move scripts to the footer and add the defer attribute.
    • <script src="app.js" defer></script>
  2. Critical CSS: Extract the CSS required for the "above-the-fold" content and inline it in the <head>. Load the rest of the stylesheet asynchronously.
  3. Code Splitting: If using React/Vue, ensure you are loading components only when needed.

Checklist for Implementation

  • [ ] Run PSI and record initial scores.
  • [ ] Install/Configure Redis for object caching.
  • [ ] Convert all images to AVIF/WebP.
  • [ ] Add width/height attributes to all images.
  • [ ] Implement fetchpriority="high" on LCP element.
  • [ ] Defer all non-essential JavaScript.
  • [ ] Minify CSS/JS files.
  • [ ] Enable Gzip or Brotli compression on the server.
  • [ ] Set up a CDN (Cloudflare).
  • [ ] Re-run PSI and verify improvements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-optimizing: Don't compress images to the point of pixelation. Aim for a balance.
  • Ignoring 3rd Party Scripts: Chat widgets and tracking pixels are often the primary cause of poor INP. If you don't need it, remove it.
  • Testing on Desktop Only: Mobile is the primary metric for Google. Always optimize for the slowest device.
  • Cache Invalidation: Ensure your cache clears when you update content, or you'll serve stale data.

Before and After: A Real-World Case

Scenario: An e-commerce site with a heavy hero slider and 15+ tracking scripts.

Before: * LCP: 4.2s * CLS: 0.25 (Poor) * INP: 450ms (Poor) * Performance Score: 38/100

The Fix: 1. Replaced image slider with a single optimized AVIF hero image. 2. Added min-height to the product grid to stop layout shifts. 3. Implemented defer on all marketing scripts. 4. Enabled Redis and Cloudflare edge caching.

After: * LCP: 1.8s * CLS: 0.02 (Good) * INP: 120ms (Good) * Performance Score: 92/100

Final Thoughts

Performance is an ongoing process, not a "set it and forget it" task. Every new plugin or script added to your site is a potential bottleneck. Keep your stack lean, your assets compressed, and your server responsive.
